AROPS is a non-political body, but its interests are opposed to any threat to independent education. Changes in national policy are carefully considered on behalf of member societies. The committee also arranges surveys providing information on matters of current interest to members. ==History== The Association of Representatives of Old Boys' Societies was started by M.E.C. Comer of the Old Johnian Society at an inaugural meeting in December 1971. Its objectives were "to provide a forum for the exchange of views and experience between representatives of old boys’ societies". It was originally envisaged that only members of the Headmasters Conference would join. In 1978 the title was altered to its present form to bring girls’ and co-ed schools into the fold. More recently societies from preparatory schools have joined.
